It’s no secret that the Obama administration lied about the Iran Deal. The preliminary deal that was agreed by Congress in April was much different than the final agreement made in July.
But, how did the administration get the public to support this deal in the first place? The New York Times just exposed how Obama used story-tellers to sell a “often misleading or false” narrative to the public in a thorough article. The main author of this narrative was Obama’s deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes.
“The way in which most Americans have heard the story of the Iran deal presented … was largely manufactured for the purpose of selling the deal,” wrote David Samuels for the New York Times. “The “story” of the Iran deal began in 2013, when a “moderate” faction inside the Iranian regime led by Hassan Rouhani beat regime “hard-liners” in an election and then began to pursue a policy of “openness,” which included a newfound willingness to negotiate the dismantling of its illicit nuclear- weapons program.”
But in actuality, the terms of this Iran deal were already outlined in as early as 2012. Starting in 2013, Rhodes was part of the scheme to convince the public that Iran was open to negations. Evidently, this had already been in the works for years.
Rhodes explains to Samuels how he was in involved in the deceitful marketing strategy.
“When I suggested that all this dark metafictional play seemed a bit removed from rational debate over America’s future role in the world, Rhodes nodded. “In the absence of rational discourse, we are going to discourse the [expletive] out of this,” he said. “We had test drives to know who was going to be able to carry our message effectively, and how to use outside groups like Ploughshares, the Iran Project and whomever else. So we knew the tactics that worked.” He is proud of the way he sold the Iran deal. “We drove them crazy,” he said of the deal’s opponents,” wrote Samuels.
Thanks to the New York Times, the public knows the truth. Rhodes was instructed by the Obama administration to push a false story to the media and they ran with it. This was all part of the ploy to paint Obama’s foreign policy “efforts” in a positive light, while taking the focus away from the failure of Sunni Arab.
