The advocacy group for illegal immigrants, The United Council of La Raza has announced that it will be changing its name “UnidosUs”, which translates to “United us,” or “United States United.”
La Raza argues that the name-change was not influenced by conservative criticism, but because the term “Raza” received some anti-Latino racism from the Latino community.
“Raza” translates as “the people, but is also interpreted as “the race.”
“Literally translated, “raza” means “race,” but that is not the definition of the word. The term for “the people” was coined to describe the various races Mexican people come from. Chicano civil rights activists popularized it in the 1960s and 1970s and its faced backlash today,” writes the AP News.
The term has been criticized and described as promoting “ethnic exclusivity.”
The group was started 49 years ago and lobbies for better health care, education and job opportunities for the Latin community. It was a big supporter of President Obama’s health care law.
The Obama administration granted $30 million to the Youth Policy Institute, which is an affiliate of the National Council of La Raza, as part of an education and anti-poverty program.
In the past, the group has successfully raised a tremendous amount of funds.
“The National Council of La Raza succeeded in raking in over $15.2 million in federal grants last year alone, of which $7.9 million was in U.S. Department of Education grants for Charter Schools, and undisclosed amounts were for get-out-the-vote efforts supporting La Raza political positions,” writes Human Events. “The Council of La Raza succeeded in having itself added to congressional hearings by Republican House and Senate leaders. And an anonymous senator even gave the Council of La Raza an extra $4 million in earmarked taxpayer money, supposedly for “housing reform,” while La Raza continues to lobby the Senate for virtual open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens.”
The “La Raza” has morphed into a movement and where supporters have often used hateful, violent, and threatening language against legal Americans in support of protecting illegal aliens.
There is also a street gang in Chicago by this name.
With the name-change, it looks like the group is looking for more support to combat the Trump administration.
“I think this is viewed as an opportunity and we see it as an opportunity to strengthen our organization, broaden our reach and expand our growth,” said Janet Murguia, president of the The National Council of La Raza, soon to be UnidosUs. “And that’s going to be important as we see the challenges that we’re facing at this particular time.”
President Trump has taken a strict stance on illegal immigration and has plans to build a wall along the southern U.S.-Mexico border as a measure to limit illegal crossings. He previously called out a federal judge for being a member of the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association.
“For us, the model did shift from a lot of the building on the success to protecting and defending the gains that we have made up to this point. It’s been our primary focus in the Trump administration,” said Murguia.
Author’s note: This organization is changing its name to try to hide its roots, hoping that people will forget. New name or not, Murguia has made it clear that the group is declaring war and won’t likely be friendly to law abiding Americans.
