New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed on Wednesday that suspicious packages containing explosive devices were intercepted from being sent to former president Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
A package addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan was also received at CNN‘s headquarters in New York City and at Cuomo’s office.
“There is a number of devices and there’s a pattern apparently to the number of devices. We wouldn’t be at all surprised if more devices show up. A device has been sent to my office in Manhattan which we were just informed about that and device is also being handled,” said Cuomo.
“BREAKING: Secret Service intercepts suspicious packages addressed to the residences of former President Obama and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Working with our law enforcement partners on the investigation,” tweeted the U.S. Secret Service Wednesday morning.
On Monday, a similar package was discovered at liberal billionaire George Soros’ New York compound. According to a law enforcement source, this packaged was believed to be placed directly into Soros’ mailbox.
Another package addressed to Eric Holder was intercepted at Florida U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’ office on Wednesday. The office of U.S. Rep Maxine Waters said it was also sent a suspicious package.
Bryan Paamann, an FBI special agent who leads the counterterrorism division in New York, said the devices found in the packages appear to be pipe bombs and to be constructed similarly.
The total number of packages sent with bombs has yet to be determined.
“A number of devices have been sent. They’re being handled. We wouldn’t be surprised if additional devices are sent. And the device that is been sent to my office has been identified and is being handled as we speak,” said Cuomo.
The package with a live explosive and an envelope containing white powder sent to the CNN office was recovered by NYC police. The Secret Service intercepted the package on its way to Obama Wednesday morning. The package intended for Clinton was discovered Tuesday night by the FBI, Secret Service and New Castle Police Department.
“The packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such,” said officials.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the mailings “an act of terror.”
“This was clearly an act of terror attempting to undermine the free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence,” said De Blasio. “We’ve seen worse. And we will not be intimidated.”
The White House was quick to condemn the attempted attacks on the politicians and press.
“These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” said Sarah Sanders, the U.S. press secretary.
Trump said “we have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that threats or acts of political violence have no place in the United States of America” and that “the full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation.”
Author’s note: It’s likely that there are more packages being intercepted as we speak.
Editor’s note: It’s hard to say the purpose of this, but my own guess is this was not terrorists. These are all aimed at prominent Democrats and they are likely to be intended to influence the mid-term elections.
