Gun manufacturers are cutting ties with Dick’s Sports Goods after it was revealed the company hired three lobbyists to promote gun control legislation in Washington.
Dick’s in February introduced new restrictions on gun sales following the school shooting in Parkland, which was conducted by a teenager who was able to legally purchase an AR-15 despite clear signs of mental instability and violent intent.
In April, Dick’s announced it would destroy all remaining AR-15’s in its inventory.
Dick’s decisions enraged pro-Second Amendment activists, who are now portraying Dick’s as “anti-Second Amendment.”
The NRA accused Dick’s of “punishing law-abiding citizens” and the National Shooting Sports Foundation revoked Dick’s membership.
Mossberg and MKS Supply announced they would stop selling to Dick’s this week, with Mossberg CEO Iver Mossberg urging consumers to “visit one of the thousands of pro-Second Amendment firearm retailers” instead.
MKS President Charles Brown accused Dicks of “villainizing modern sporting rifles in response to pressure from uninformed, anti-gun voices” and said it was wrong for Dick’s to restrict gun sales to individuals who are old enough to serve in the military.
Springfield Armory ended its relationship with Dick’s earlier this month, and “it’s only a matter of time before companies like Remington, Ruger, and Colt stop doing business with Dick’s too,” notes Racked.
Gun sales make up a full 10% of Dick’s annual income, and the exit of manufacturers could mean a loss of millions. The company is also facing two lawsuits over its decision to impose an age limit on purchasing firearms.
Editor’s note: Dick’s has brought this upon itself. This goes to show that corporations should stay out of politics.
