On Tuesday, President Donald Trump sent a series of tweets about thousands of migrants from Central America that were marching to the U.S.-Mexico border, claiming this is exactly why we need a wall.
“The big Caravan of People from Honduras, now coming across Mexico and heading to our ‘Weak Laws’ Border, had better be stopped before it gets there.” He added: “Cash cow NAFTA is in play, as is foreign aid to Honduras and the countries that allow this to happen. Congress MUST ACT NOW!” tweet Trump “Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!”
Apparently, over a 1,000 migrants from Central America, a majority from Honduras, were on a trek to both Mexico and the United States to seek refuge.
The Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray alluded to Trump’s criticism of how Mexico was handling the situation.
“Every day Mexico and the U.S. work together on migration throughout the region. Facts clearly reflect this,” said Videgaray. “Upholding human dignity and rights is not at odds with the rule of law.”
The march is an annual event organized by a group called Pueblo Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders to publicize the dangerous conditions and the gang violence in Central America they were escaping from.
“These are families — women, children, men, too — fleeing horrific violence,” said Denise Gilman, a University of Texas law professor, to NBC News. “They’re fleeing crime, they are not criminals.”
Trump expressed concerns that some of these migrants are criminals pretending to be asylum seekers just to get into the U.S.
Trump also said the U.S. plans to deploy the military to safeguard the border.
“Until we can have a wall and proper security, we’re going to be guarding our border with the military. That’s a big step,” said Trump to reporters.
However, it appears as though Mexico has already detained the migrants, according to an official from Mexico’s National Institute of Migration.
But the President also warned that this is only going to continue to be an issue with current legislation.
“Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. “Caravans” coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!” tweeted Trump.
Will this also impact the Nafta negotiations that are currently in process?
“Mr. Trump’s threats on Nafta come as American, Canadian and Mexican officials are months into talks to overhaul the 24-year-old trade agreement. Late last month, the parties indicated they had cleared what had been a sticking point on auto-industry issues, a move that could put them on track to reach a possible deal as early as this month. Trade analysts have suggested the U.S. may be interested in a quick end to Nafta talks in light of the administration’s recently announced trade actions against China,” writes the Wall Street Journal.
Author’s note: Trump was quick to pressure Mexico to handle this situation. This certainly inspired Mexican officials to handle this much quicker than they may have without being on blast.
