NOTE: This commentary was submitted before the question of a federal government shutdown has occurred or not occurred. In either case, do not be alarmed. Essential services are never shut down and any shutdown will be short-lived. The vast majority of Americans will not be affected. Unfortunately, if the budget gets a short-term fix, as is most likely the case, we will go through all this nonsense again very soon.
Stalin according to a Flake
I must assume that Senator Jeff Flake is enormously and irrationally bitter over his inability to even face the voters of Arizona. The election of Donald Trump and the political demise of Flake have put the senator on a full court press against Trump and the Republican Party. He uses his considerable oratorical talents to spew venom against all that do not reflect his unique vision of reality.
His latest offering (leaked by him in advance of this speech to ensure maximum media attention) is comparing President Trump to the murderous despot Joseph Stalin. He refers to Trump once calling the biased media “an enemy of the people” – a phrase that was coincidentally used by Stalin.
Flake claims he is not comparing Trump to Stalin even as he … compares Trump to Stalin. Flake is sufficiently intelligent to know that even his disclaimer will be ignored by the anti-Trump media and the never-Trump public.
As a savvy self-promoter, Flake knows that attacking Trump for attacking the press will get him a LOT of time and space in the elitist media. Even before his highly promoted speech is delivered, he is the darling of the liberal news spinners.
Flake is both shrewd and vicious. I guess Hell hath no fury like a politician scorned.
Clean bill of health for the President
It is pity time for the never-Trumpers on one of their main narratives. President Trump is both physically and mentally healthy. Dr. Ronny Jackson’s overall assessment rated Trump’s health as “excellent” – declaring the President quite fit to hold the office to which he was elected. Being only a couple years younger than me, I would say his health is “outstanding.” While I am in what is called “generally good health,” I would gladly trade my medical evaluations with his.
This did not stop a few of the more aggressive anti-Trump journalists from trying to find some area on which to pin a spin. No matter how many times the President’s medical advisor assured the press corps that Trump had no signs of any sort of mental deficiency or impairment they persisted in asking leading questions in the hope of finding some qualification in Dr. Jackson’s professional judgment.
Now cometh the New York Times. Imagine this headline after the White House physician and a dozen specialists, who actually examined Trump, determined his health to be “excellent.”
Trump’s Physical Revealed Serious Heart Concerns, Outside Experts Say
That report is based on the long-distance assessment by unethical and dishonest doctors. It does not matter what their resumes look like, they confirm my characterization by diagnosing a specific patient that they have not personally examined – and then making a public announcement of their incompetent opinion for political purposes. One might expect such trash medical opining from Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s in-house politicized medical analyst. The others seem to be either publicity seekers or Trump haters. And it figures that the New York Times would go out hunting for disreputable doctors to do the dirty work.
Among the more outrageous television Trump haters (chosen from a large field of contenders) were CNN’s Don Lemon and his Trump hating panel who, without a scintilla of medical knowledge, challenged the veracity and character of Dr. Jackson and his colleagues, and “Doctor” Mika Brzezinski, who seemed crushed by the good health news during her morning broadcast. In their characteristic funereal tones, Lemon and Brzezinski were not ready to accept the evaluation of REAL doctors. Given Lemon’s emotional on-air meltdowns and Brzezinski’s repeated claims of political induced depression, I am inclined to rate Trump’s mental stability better than theirs – seriously.
Also, keep in mind that Trump’s health assessment was made by a team of 12 medical specialists during an intense four-hour examination. Of course, this all comes as a great disappointment to those who want Trump hauled off by those men in white suits or live in the hope that he would be found slumped over the big desk in the Oval Office. Trump’s health assessment also kills off the ridiculous idea of using – or misusing – the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
Given this new standard of inquiry by the press, I think Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden – to name a few — should submit to the same tests with complete transparency in revealing the results. In Warren’s case, I would also like to see a DNA test.
When questioning Trump’s physician, several reporters referred to President Reagan’s Alzheimer’s disease that went undetected during the final years of his term of office. Of course, their matter-of-fact diagnosis of the former President was little more than partisan political drivel. Their assertions have no basis in fact. They are bogus. The unprofessional, incompetent and dishonest claim is based on the fact that Reagan contracted Alzheimer’s SIX YEARS AFTER HE LEFT OFFICE. There is no medical evidence that Reagan had any diminished mental capacity throughout his tenure in office. This is the kind of reporting that gives legitimacy to the term “fake news.”
No nightmare for Dreamers
Most of what passes for news today is biased opinion-based narratives that are overly sensationalized like the pre-match banter of a WWE wrestling event.
Take the Dreamer issue.
Newscasts build tension by creating juxtaposing positions between Republicans and Democrats. The heartless Republicans, led by an anti-immigration ogre in President Trump, want to toss out those hundreds of thousands of folks who were brought to this country as children.
Supposed proof of President Trump’s intent to deport those folks is his refusal to extend the dubious temporary protection put in place by President Obama. Every day more than 1000 of the Dreamers are placed at risk, they say – living with the uncertainty of their future. Every day, the media terrorizes the Dreamers by reports that the March deadline will soon be upon us – or them – and if legislation is not passed and signed, they might be deported to nations with which they have no experiential ties.
Wow! What a great Hollywood script. The tension! The drama! The problem is, the scenario is as fictional as any Hollywood script. It is media hype passing as news. Here is the real story
First, Dreamers are not going to be deported en masse – although those with criminal records may be booted. That should not be a problem for anyone.
Prior to acting, President Obama, a much-touted constitutional scholar, said the President did not have the power to take unilateral action to protect the Dreamers. Only Congress could do that. Later, he decided to ignore his own good legal counsel and took action anyway. The constitutionality of that action is yet to be settled by the courts.
Obama did not fix the problem. He merely kicked the can down the road. His action took Congress off the hook and left Dreamers in a state of future uncertainty. Obama’s politically motivated temporary reprieve for the Dreamers runs out in March.
At the onset, Trump said he wants the Dreamers to stay in America legally and permanently, but rather than continue Obama’s constitutionally questionable method, Trump puts it up to Congress to pass the proper constitutional legislation which he said he would sign. Since Republicans and Democrats both want to give Dreamers legal status, it will be done.
Far from being an autocrat usurping power (as Obama did), Trump’s position respects the balance of powers and the legitimate constitutional role of Congress. He is also protecting the Dreamers from a very possible adverse court ruling which would subject Dreamers to a sudden threat of deportation.
There will be a bit of political tussling over tangential immigration issues, such as the Wall, chain migration and the diversity lottery, but normalization for Dreamers is a foregone conclusion despite the hyper dramatic reporting in the press.
When it is all accomplished, the Dreamers should be thanking President Trump for taking them out of Obama’s temporary Limbo, away from a possible negative court decision and for providing them with the certainty of staying in America legally for the rest of their lives. It may happen soon or closer to the deadline, but it will happen.
Meaningless political symbolism
The political left has always loved symbolic stunts even if they serve no purpose other than giving the appearance of substance. We saw that when a group of congressional Democrats planted their posteriors on the floor to halt the work of the legislature looking like a group of pouting kindergarten children. As I watched a few of the members attempting to regain their footing, I was fully expecting to hear “Help! I’ve fallen and can’t get up.”
Then there were the liberal lady legislators dressing all in white to protest what they perceived to be President Trump’s opposition to their left-wing feminist agenda. They chose what they called “suffragette white,” the color of clothing that was the symbol of the early fight for the women’s vote. Inadvertently, they emphasized a significant difference. While the protesting members of Congress were all political insider Democrats, all those suffragettes they so honored were all Republican citizens fighting against Democrat opposition.
Democrat Congressman John Lewis is a perennial no-show at national government events whenever Republicans are in charge. When seeking publicity for his latest protest, he need only change the date on the news release and fill in a couple of blanks.
Perhaps, you have forgotten these activities. That is the point. They are relatively meaningless.
Now we have the State of the Union protest. The liberal show of protest is taking two forms. First, there are the Democrats who have grabbed a split second of public notoriety by indignantly announcing that they will not attend President Trump’s address to the Congress. Who cares? The memory of their non-appearances will be washed away in the wake of the speech.
Democrat lady legislatures are engaging in a long-standing feminine custom of never wearing the same dress twice to a major event. Instead of white dresses, the congressional ladies will take their fashion lead from Hollywood (nothing new there) and wear black. The only difference between the legislators and the Tinsel Town lady luminaries is that the legislator’s hems will be lower and the necklines won’t be.
