First a tale of two pities
The not so funny comedienne Kathy Griffin and former Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have a lot in common. Most notably, they both hate Donald Trump. They both seem to believe that their path to the top of their respective professions was stolen from them by evil political forces associated with the dreaded Trump. They are both very bitter women.
In the case of Clinton, you may recall that years ago she claimed victimization at the hands of some nebulous “vast right wing conspiracy.” Her book, What Happened, was her explanation for the 2016 defeat. The book should have had a question mark in the title since it is obvious that Clinton is not the best judge of her failure. She blamed the Russians, former FBI director James Comey, the Democratic National Committee, Bernie Sanders and her own campaign team. That is her story and she’s sticking to it. She has now added FOX News to the blame list. According to Hillary, her husband would never have been President had FOX existed at the time of his race for the White House. Since they were around for her campaigns … well … you know where that is going.
Kathy Griffin had the poor taste of posing for a picture holding up a sculpted severed head of President Trump – an image that had not gained so much notoriety since Salome delivered up the real head of John the Baptist to King Herod. There was a backlash to be sure (speaking of Griffin). But, a quick cruise through social media would reveal innumerable disgusting images of a slain President Trump. Griffin’s was by far not the most offensive. And if she is correct that her pictorial attack on Trump killed off her comedy career, she needs to explain how all those late night comics manage to survive.
What these women do not understand or refuse to appreciate is that they were NEVER all that popular. Clinton had her only elective victory in the uniquely left wing culture of New York where the powers that be could rig both her nomination and election. Other than that, she couldn’t beat an upstart junior senator from Illinois in 2008 and she only won the 2016 nomination by rigging the system against an outlier socialist senator from a relatively unimportant state. And finally, she could not beat the most unpopular person ever to secure the Republican nomination.
In Griffin’s case, she is actually better known for her political stunt than her standup comedy. She was never a first tier comedienne – maybe not even a third tier. Like Clinton, she had some name recognition but that is not the same as positive popularity and audience appeal. Neither Clinton nor Griffin had sustainable careers in the chosen professions.
It is a pitiful, however, to see them both shamelessly putting their mortally wounded careers on public display in a futile effort to reclaim what they never had.
No Father’s Day present for LaVar Ball
When three black American college basketball players decided to do a little high end shoplifting in China, President Trump persuaded his Chinese counterpart to send the boys home rather than putting them on a trial that would have certainly resulted in conviction and confinement to one of those nasty communist jails for several years. The boys were sent home as a personal favor to Trump. The boys must have been thrilled to get on that America bound airplane. Each publicly expressed remorse for their misdeed and each thanked President Trump for getting them out of harm’s way – although the elitist media largely failed to cover the boy’s expressions of gratitude at the time.
That should have been the end of the story. But showboating daddy LaVar Ball not only refused to thank the President but even stated that Trump had done nothing to achieve the release. (Which unfortunately brought out the worst in the President.) Instead, Ball intimated that HE, through some nameless contacts in China, got the boys released.
In a very long and ridiculous interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Ball demonstrated why he will never be father of the year. He brushed off the shoplifting as relatively meaningless — just a nice boy doing something silly. Ball said that where he grew up, he had seen a lot worse. I believe he has and apparently it influenced his judgment on matters of right and wrong. If you did not rape or kill someone, it was no big deal, according to Ball.
It was not really an interview, Cuomo engaged Ball in a prolonged monologue that fluctuated between offensive and idiotic. In that appearance, Ball reinforced his reputation as … well to put it succinctly … as a big mouth who is addicted to the limelight. What was missing was a father’s good advice in dealing with his son’s criminal activity and proper appreciation to a guy who did his son a BIG favor.
FOOTNOTE: The so-called interview also revealed all the biases and shallowness of Cuomo as a news interviewer. By allowing Ball to continue his monologue, Cuomo and CNN only made themselves the foil for Lavar’s ignorant screed.
Mika Brzezinski, have you learned nothing?
You would think that as the daughter of a former national security advisor under President Carter, Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski would have a better grasp of foreign policy. Apparently, her palpable hatred of Donald Trump trumps all objectivity and anything she may have overheard at the breakfast table.
Most recently, Mika spun yet another anti-Trump narrative, in this case involving North Korea. She alleges that Trump’s naming NK as a rogue sponsor of state terrorism will only prevent the all important diplomatic approach. You know … that approach that the liberals see as the evergreen solution to all international challenges. It is a Chamberlain-at-Munich mentality.
The diplomatic approach? What can that girl be thinking? That has been tried for some forty years. We signed agreements with the regime. We bribed them. We removed sanctions. We even previously took them off the list of state sponsors of terrorism. We have negotiated across the table. All this to no satisfactory end.
All the while we have been pursuing the left’s version of a diplomatic option, the Kim family has been unabatedly pursuing their nuclear program with great success. For decades our diplomats have repeatedly said that a nuclear NK was unacceptable. That has been our national policy through six presidencies. During this prolooooonged diplomatic approach, Kim & Co. have developed the bombs, built medium-range missiles and now are on the eve of intercontinental missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. They show no sign of turning back.
When will the ever-appeasing left finally admit that we need to get tougher? Naming NK as a terrorist nation will increase sanctions and put more necessary pressure on China. It will trigger similar action around the world. It is a diplomatic move, not the end of diplomacy as Mika imagines. Of course, if this fails, then the matter will have to be left to the military – which is becoming less of threat and more of a promise.
Assault with a dead weapon
The title comes from an old joke about sex and seniors. I shall assume it needs no further explanation.
When I predicted in a previous commentary that the Hollywood Weinstein scandal would come to the nation’s capital, I never dreamed that one of the outed offenders would be an 88-year-old congressman who has been warming a seat in the House of Representatives since 1965 – the year I graduated from Knox College. Michigan’s own John Conyers has now been accused of using his high office to secure carnal pleasures and for having what we used to refer to as “roving hands.” At his age, one is not sure if the proper response is unqualified condemnation or a bit of begrudging admiration. If he is forced out of Congress – something no opponent was able to do in more than 50 years – maybe Conyers can become spokesperson for Viagra.
Conyers finally admitted that he did pay off one of the ladies, but still denied the charges. He said the $27,000 was just normal severance pay. You have to live in the D.C. bubble of special privilege to believe that 27K is what the typical part-time worker is given after being given the boot. In addition, she was offered a “no show” job so that her payoff could continue ad infinitum – and with all taxpayer money.
Viva la France
It would appear that the United States’ growing hysteria over expanded definitions of sexual misconduct is not sweeping France – the world center of seduction and romance. As so many accusations of inappropriate sexual misconduct arise in the American media, the people and leaders of France are pushing back at what they describe as “America’s puritanical standards.” They see a difference between punishing serious criminal sexual behavior and criminalizing all those long accepted practices of seduction and romance – a distinction the hardcore left and radical feminist seem determined to eradicate.
That conflict between the romanticism of France and the coldness of radical left wing feminism was best captured in an old movie, Silk Stockings, in which Fred Astaire plays an American in Paris and Cyd Charisse plays an untouchable iceberg cold Russian communist official. Of course, the magic of Paris and the seductiveness of Astaire combine to bring out the femininity in the erstwhile feminist.
Each time I have seen that movie, the old cold Charisse character always reminded me of many of our own uptight radical feminists. Her initial rejections of Astaire’s attempts at seduction sound like much of today’s political correctness dialogue. Check it out.
OMG. Fake News does exist.
I have never liked the term “fake news” unless it is applied to those in social media who create totally false stories under the misused banner heads of real news outlets. That is fake news. What the elitist media does is false narratives, specious analysis and biased spinning. In one case, however, I must admit that the false narrative can only be described as fake news or no news as news.
Week after week, we see reports warning against the POSSIBILITY that Trump COULD (or could not) fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The President has said that he has no such intention, and every White House spokesperson has reaffirmed that position. But, still the story rolls on endlessly. The Democrats appeal for money and grassroots action to stop the President from firing Mueller. Polls are taken to see if the public would approve or disapprove of Trump firing Mueller. Democrats propose politically inspired legislation to prevent the President from doing what he said he has no intention of doing. Media trumped up hysteria constantly waves this imaginary red flag in the face of the public out of political allegiance to the left and without regard to the parameters of professional journalism. It may go down as the longest playing, substance-lacking news story of all time.
