Last night’s loss in the Georgia-06 District has the Democrats leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to discover why they lost last night. They have looked everywhere from here to Moscow except the most important place– in front of a mirror.
The Democrats are in frantically searching for an excuse as to why Jon Ossoff, the Democratic Candidate who was bequeathed $30 million for his war chest, lost the election. Ossoff won the jungle primary with 48.1% of the vote and then spent all this money to lose with…48.1% of the vote. Money well spent. Nevertheless, the Excuse Machines are at it again.
People on twitter of course blamed Russia, the Neo-Macarthyan wing of the party. Others blamed “the classics” of progressive insults: white privilege, bigotry, racism, etc. Sally Kohn, a well-known progressive pendant, believed that Ossoff lost because he was too moderate and didn’t go far enough.
Although, I think my favorite excuse goes to Rachael Maddow blaming the rain in the southern region of the district for low turnout among Democrats. I guess only Republicans go out into the rain. Nevertheless, this was a symbolic victory for Karen Handel and the Trump Administration who now feel safe to go forward with their agenda. Indeed, just this morning Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell- R-KY introduced the Senate Republican Healthcare Bill which is now being considered.
Though the excuses are wide-spread, there is a growing cacophony of voices among the Democrat Party who are beginning to turn to a different reason why Democrats keeping losing; Nancy Pelosi’s leadership. Nancy Pelosi D-CA has been one of the key figures in the Democratic Party. The face of opposition to the Bush agenda beginning in 2006 as House Speaker, she has watched as her once iron-clad majority in the Congress erode to near super-minority. The Democrats lost the House in 2010 and since then have only been able to net one House Seat back.
Pelosi is a walking YouTube video with her seemingly senior moments and outrageous statements like “we got to vote on it so we can see what’s in it”. She also was a key target in Karen Handel’s, Jon Ossoff’s opponent, campaign ads. So now, the question is arising if the Democrats need a new leader.
This isn’t the first time Pelosi’s leadership has come into question. Earlier this year Pelosi faced Tim Ryan-D-OH as a challenger to her House Minority Leader position but she ultimately prevailed. Now the knives are out again for her. They have lost 5 straight opportunities to win back seats in the House under advantageous circumstances. These special elections include the two rounds in Georgia-06, Montana, Kansas, and South Carolina.
They take comfort that their loss wasn’t as bad as it should have been. But has my dad used to say, “almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades”. They still lost and that has Democrats fuming mad. Surely in a Trump Presidency people would be flocking to their Anti-Nazi, Anti-bigot, Anti-racist, Anti-Islamophobic, and Anti-homophobic banner. But, alas, to no avail and obviously someone must be held accountable. Pelosi is that someone.
However, some people are coming to Pelosi’s rescue. Pelosi believes herself to be a target now because of her fundraising capabilities and because she is “a master legislator”. President Donald Trump, for his part, did tweet something to the effect of “Please Keep Pelosi and Schumer,” perhaps playing mind games with the Democratic base. To some Democrats this shows that is this an effort to disrupt the Democrats further.
Drew Hammill, Pelosi’s deputy chief-of-staff, stated “Republicans blew through millions to keep a ruby red seat, and in their desperate rush to stop the hemorrhaging, they’ve returned to demonizing the party’s strongest fundraiser and consensus builder… They don’t have Clinton or Obama, so this is what they do.”
Although there is a lot of hubbub it is unlikely that Pelosi’s position of leadership is in legitimate danger. However, I think the Democrats are continuing to dilute themselves when it comes to their brand. Tim Ryan stated that the Democrat brand was “worse than Trump” but not because of what they push, but how they present it. I think they need to stop and look at their brand and tactics.
They are for open and free borders and anything less than that will be attacked as “racist”. They are for subjugating American sovereignty to international organizations like the UN in near cultist fervor of Environmentalism and anything less than that is attacked as xenophobic or apocalyptic. They are for unrestricted refugees from the Middle East and anything less than that is attacked as Islamophobic. I could go on but you get the point. They take a hard-left stance on a topic and denounce anyone who has even the slightest idea to the contrary as some sort of misanthrope.
That is why they lost– not because of Pelosi, not because of Russia, and certainly not because of the darn rain!
Editor’s note: This is one of the most dogmatic and partisan people in the country. She would gladly pass a bill that would hurt the country (like Obamacare) rather than put thought into the bill and have it make sense. The country would be better off if she would retire.
