Following last summer’s Brexit and recent disagreements with President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the US and Britain are no longer reliable partners.
“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out,” said Merkel. “I’ve experienced that in the last few days. We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands.”
Merkel’s harsh comments may signal a “potentially seismic shift in trans-Atlantic relations,” reports the New York Times. “With the United States less willing to intervene overseas, Germany is becoming an increasingly dominant power in a partnership with France.”
Merkel’s criticisms of the US follow the recent G7 summit in Italy, during which all member nations except the US recommitted to the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Climate change is one of many areas in which Trump and Merkel don’t see eye to eye. Other key disagreements include immigration, globalization, Russia, and trade.
Trump has repeatedly criticized Germany for not pulling its weight as a member of NATO and, more recently, has described German trade practices as “very bad.”
On Saturday, President Trump promised that he would make a decision about the Paris treaty sometime this week.
Speaking at a campaign event on Sunday, Merkel stressed the fact that Europeans would continue to work in friendship with Russia, the US, and the UK whenever possible. If her party is successful in German elections this September, Merkel will stand for a fourth term as chancellor.
Editor’s note: Merkel misses Obama. Obama was a socialist which made much of Europe very comfortable, that they could lead their own economic self destruction with the support of the U.S. President. Obama was also supported Europe taking in more refugees, a huge mistake that Europe is paying for now in spades. With Obama in power at least they had someone to tell them their sacrifice was worth it. Trump is an adult who is making them realize how stupid some of their ideas have been.
