Europe is in danger of losing its culture to the massive number of refugees now living within its borders.
This warning comes from the Dalai Lama, and is a concern PB Post has expressed numerous times since the beginning of the refugee crisis.
Germany took in more than 1 million refugees in 2016. These migrants come from nations including Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Germany is in danger of becoming an Arab country, warned the 80-year-old Buddhist leader. “There are too many [refugees] at the moment… Europe, Germany in particular, cannot become an Arab country. Germany is Germany,” he said during an interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allegemier Zeitung.
The Dalai Lama reiterated the need to help the suffering, but says the solution to the current crisis in Europe is to send the refugees back home. “The goal should be to return and help rebuild their own countries,” he said. “I think that the refugees should only be admitted temporarily.”
The famous monk’s views on immigration are not so different from those of President Donald Trump. While the latter has been met with harsh criticism for his policies, the Dalai Lama was recently named the ‘world’s most popular leader’ – with nearly 80% of adults having a favorable opinion of him.
The Dalai Lama lauded Europe’s generosity, but reminds us that “you have to be practical… It’s impossible for everyone to come to Europe.”
The Dalai Lama is somewhat of a refugee himself, having fled Tibet after the uprising against the Chinese government in 1959. He has been living in exile in India for nearly 60 years, but hopes to one day return to Tibet.
