Hillary Clinton was quick to throw Colin Powell, former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, under the bus when she said last week he was the one who told her to use a private email system for official use.
But, now Powell is setting the story straight.
“Her people have been trying to pin it on me,” said Powell to People. “The truth is, she was using [the private email server] for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did.”
The New York Times reported last week that Clinton had told the FBI that Powell had advised her to use a private server, except for classified communications. He admitted that he used a private email while in the office, but he never had a private server.
When asked why he thought Clinton blamed him for her private email use, Powell said “Why do you think? It doesn’t bother me. But it’s okay; I’m free.”
Powell’s representatives released an official statement regarding the correspondence with Clinton over the matter.
“He did write former Secretary Clinton an email memo describing his use of his personal AOL email account for unclassified messages and how it vastly improved communications within the State Department,” Powell’s office said to NBC.
This email exchange occurred in 2009, as reported by the New York Times.
Last month the FBI closed the investigation on Clinton’s use of the private email server. FBI Director James Comey stated her behavior was “extremely careless,” but stated that he was against pressing any criminal charges.
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus defended Powell this week, even though they have opposing political stances.
“Clinton’s pattern of serial dishonesty is completely unacceptable for a candidate seeking the nation’s highest office, and her refusal to tell the truth and own up to her poor judgment is a preview of how she would conduct herself if elected president,” said Priebus in a statement Monday. “Even worse, this news comes on the heels of the Clinton camp falsely trying to pin her email woes on Colin Powell, raising serious questions about whether she lied to the FBI.”
