A lone gunman armed with an assault rifle and hand gun has killed at least 50 people and injured an additional 53 in gay night club Pulse, in Orlando, Florida. The gunman opened fire in the club around 2 am this (Sunday) morning and unfolded into a hostage situation and shootout with police.
The suspect has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29 born in New York. but more recently of Fort Pierce, FL and the “have suggestions this the individual has leanings toward Islamic terrorism.” Investigators have said while this individual was not on a watch list he has been noted as being “on the edge” of radical Islamic groups.
At around 5am, the police stormed the club, freed 30 club go-ers and shot him dead.
This has been classified as domestic terrorism by FBI and Orlando authorities. The shooter’s father claimed “this had nothing to do with religion” however he noted that his son was incensed a few months ago after seeing two men kissing in Miami.
I believe investigators will find he was attached to a larger more organized Islamic organization. They will find this target was selected to make a statement, and this shooter was selected precisely because he was not on any watch list yet. If you examine this from a tactical standpoint, it was professionally executed.
Authorities have noted this is the worst nightclub shooting in U.S. history.
Author’s note: The authorities are being very careful not to say the words “Islamic terrorist.” But make no mistake, it WAS Islamic terrorism and this was a suicide attack, as much so as the Paris attacks last year.
