A friendly meeting between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz last month at the Trump Tower in New York has us wondering if the two politicians are considering joining forces.
Remember when Trump called illegal immigrants rapists? Ted Cruz was one of the few politicians to defend him, saying that Trump “speaks the truth” and doesn’t need to apologize. “He has a colorful way of speaking.”
Trump threw his arm around Cruz after the ordeal. “I shouldn’t say this,” said Trump, “because, I assume, he’s an opponent, but the fact is he was very brave in coming out.”
The two GOP candidates met recently at the Trump Tower in New York. They discussed the possibility of holding a joint event in Washington, D.C. Trump even invited Cruz to join him on his trip to the border.
Why has Ted Cruz defended the billionaire when others have responded to his controversial comments with outrage?
“One of the reasons you’re seeing so many 2016 candidates go out of their way to smack Donald Trump is they don’t like politicians that speak directly about the challenges of illegal immigration,” said Cruz.
Ted Cruz is the son of two Hispanic immigrants.
“Cruz is being very sly,” says one of Trump’s campaign staff. “[He] attracts the same types of voter. A lot of second-choice voters for Trump are Cruz people… Cruz wants those votes.”
After having his thunder stolen by Trump’s increasingly successful campaign, I suspect the ultra-conservative Cruz is considering running as VP with Trump to be his only way into the White House.
Many believe that Cruz is moving into position just in case the real estate mogul decides to drop out of the race. Trump has built up a support base rather quickly. That group of people will need a new home if Trump calls it quits. And Ted Cruz will be ready.
