Breitbart reports Muslim terrorist and insurgent group Boko Haram slit the throats of 16 Christian fishermen on the shores of Lake Chad in northeast Nigeria last Monday. News and details have come through slowly since there is no telephone service to the area, but reports say three villages were attacked with knives.
According to Bishop Rosario Pio Ramolo, of the diocese of Goré in the south of Chad, attacks have increased in the area, resulting in over 270 deaths in recent months. This most recent attack is thought to be in retaliation for attacks from the government of Chad, whose president has vowed to stop the Muslim extremists.
Nigerian President Buhari who came to power in March had already vowed to eliminate Boko Haram, and has assembled a task force of 8700 soldiers to do the job. Thus far violence continues. Boko Haram with a force estimated between 7000 and 10000 fighters is responsible for more than 13000 deaths and over 1.5 million displaced persons.
Women and children are not out of bounds, one notorious incident involved the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls in April of 2014. It is rumored they were forced to convert to Islam and married to Boko Haram members, but as of May 2015 they had not been found.
The group is said to be initially funded from al-Qaeda affiliates, but more recently has used kidnapping, robbery and extortion. The kidnapping of a wealthy businessman in Nigerian can easily yield $1 million.
This author suspects, however, the outside support in the form of training, weapons and more is ready waiting and the governments of Chad and Nigeria will find an escalating problem. And Christians will continue to pay the price.
