While both NBC and Univision have distanced themselves from Donald Trump due to his controversial words about illegal immigrants during a recent speech, this billionaire’s stance on the matter is not a surprise. Trump has been centered on the topic for years.
Let’s take a look at Trump’s book, a bestseller published in 2011 titled Time to Get Tough. The book focuses on America’s failed immigration policies and uses data from the GAO (Government Accountability Office) to show just how much economic damage is caused by criminal illegals.
“Both sides need to grow up and put America’s interests first,” he writes, referring to both liberals and conservatives, “and that means doing what’s right for our economy, our national security, and our public safety.”
Over 300,000 criminal aliens were housed in US prisons at the time the book was published; these individuals had broken US laws after illegally crossing the border. Why should taxpayers have to pay to house prisoners who shouldn’t even be here?
The government estimated total incarceration costs for these individuals to be over $1 billion. Add to this the emotional cost: the average record for a criminal illegal is seven arrests. In his book, Trump revealed the startling fact that one third of the population in federal prisons is Latino.
“Properly built walls work,” he wrote. “We just need the political will to finish the job.” You can bet “finishing the job” will be one of his first projects if by some miracle Trump is elected President in 2016.
