Jeb Bush has several scandals he will have to answer for if he is to make a serious bid for the presidency.
Recent news articles reveal an incident that largely escaped the attention of the press at the time. One year after the Benghazi attacks, Jeb Bush presented Clinton with the Liberty Medal, a public service award from the National Constitutional Center. Many conservatives take exception to such an award going to Clinton, and see it as a sign that Jeb Bush is not conservative enough to accurately represent the Republican base. Additionally, were he to receive the Republican nomination and go up against Clinton in the general election, it would be difficult for him to quickly go from giving her awards to criticizing her.
Bush’s own wife may also be a hinderance. Years ago, Columba Bush was detained by customs officials while returning from Paris. She had lied to customs about the value of jewelry and clothing she had purchased while abroad, resulting in a fine. After the incident, Bush came out and stated that the reason she lied to customs had nothing to do with needing to declare the goods- she did not want her husband to find out that she had spent $19,000 shopping in Paris. She also appears to have a habit of taking out loans in order to purchase tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry.
In addition to that, the former Florida Governor recently stated that he doesn’t “understand the debate” over the NSA’s mass collection of cell phone data. Many Americans object to the collection of their personal information, stating that it is an invasion of privacy. Conservative voters are likely to balk at the idea of further NSA spying and are unlikely to support someone who, in his own words, is unable to understand why Americans are upset.
